The notion that Hollywood celebs are just like you and me is almost as common as the magazines that feed (and feed off) the fame machine. But Ancaster photographer Brent Perniac begs to differ. “Movie stars are different,” he insists. “They’re willing to give up everything for their dreams.” He speaks from experience, having prowled the red carpets of the Toronto International Film Festival for more a decade. In the late ’90s, he was the official TIFF photographer for US Weekly and his work is still syndicated there, along with checkout mainstays People and In Touch. He quickly learned that although the talent was generally a breed apart, they appreciated wit and surprise as much as anyone else. “Generally they don’t want to be pandered to,” Perniac says. “I’m a big fan of the late Brian Linehan, one of the great interviewers. His dedication to the back story and the smallest detail made it clear that he cared. A lot of the time, interviewers stick to the press releases – what you’re supposed to ask, what you’re allowed to ask – but if you can find something that a star is really passionate about, they’ll depart from the script and you’ll get something interesting.” Perniac was bitten by the photo bug while a music journalist at McMaster’s student paper The Silhouette. He was given the chance to review and photograph Guns’n’ Roses at Copps Coliseum, and after an evening in the press pit, he was hooked. He began taking his camera to events and documenting memorable evenings, and when the cheques started coming in the mail he realized he could make a career of it. Just don’t call him a paparazzo. As a celebrity photographer, he’s invited to cover events (often exclusively, as was the case in May when Governor Schwarzenegger appeared at Toronto’s Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex), and he’s always courteous to his subjects. “If they said no, I wouldn’t take their photograph,” he says. “It’s a pretty respectful thing.”
